Feeding Pet Budgerigars

For most Budgie owners, placing their pets on a commercial seed diet is a common practice. Packets of different types of seed mixtures can easily be bought in pet stores and groceries. However, the seeds being incorporated tend to be high in fat and carbohydrates. It is for this reason that seeds should only constitute a small part of your pet’s diet; it must NEVER BE your pet’s entire diet. As a rule of thumb, 1.5-2 teaspoons of seeds per bird is given per day. If there are several budgies in one cage, make sure that each has its own dish so they will all have a chance to eat.

Pelleted diets have been specially formulated to meet the nutritional needs of budgies. Pellets should compose 75-80% of your pet’s daily ration, while 20-25% should be fruits, vegetables, and greens. If your pet is a “seed-aholic”, switching to a pelleted diet may be difficult but not impossible. It may take 4-8 weeks to wean the bird off seeds. During this time, make sure to have pellets constantly available in a separate container while slowly decreasing the amount of seeds. For further details animal health care, click on the link.
