Reasons Why Your Hamster Smells

All pets are a bit smelly. You just can’t get around it. However, there does come a point when your animal will smell more than he should. This can be especially startling if you have a smelly hamster.

There are quite a few reasons why a hamster might smell funny, and some reasons are more serious than others.

The cage needs to be cleaned

The most common reason why a hamster smells isn’t directly because of your pet. Instead, it’s because of the cage.

Waste can easily build up in the cage, and the more waste there is, the more the cage will smell. If your hamster doesn’t have a clean cage, he’s likely to get dirty as he walks around, collecting all that waste on his fur.

A professional animal hospital recommends cleaning the cage from top to bottom once a week. It’s a good idea to clean potty areas a few times each week. Once a month, it’s a good idea to thoroughly clean the entire cage with soap and water.

Your hamster is in heat

If your hamster takes on a musky smell, but that smell doesn’t persist continuously, your pet is likely in heat. The stench is most common in female critters, because in the wild, the female would have to find a way to attract a male. As solitary creatures, attracting a mate can be hard work, which means the stench is especially strong.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot you can do to eliminate this odor. However, as your hamster gets older, the odor will become less intense. You can also try cleaning the cage more often when you notice that things are smellier than usual.

There’s a medical problem

Unfortunately, there might be a more serious reason why your hamster smells bad. It could be because your pet has a medical problem.

There are many different kinds of medical problems, and many of them progress as a hamster gets older. Some conditions cause a foul odor themselves, while others cause your pet to stop grooming himself, which in turn causes him to smell stinky.

If you want to make sure that there isn’t a medical reason for your pet’s stench, schedule an appointment with your local animal hospital. Your vet can also provide you with more tips on making sure your hamster smells like roses. For more information about this, click on the link.
