Looking for a New Pet? Consider the Skunk!

Not everyone knows exactly what kind of critter they want when they’re searching for a new forever friend. You could always choose a cat or a dog, but why not try something a bit different? According to a professional pet clinic, skunks can make great companion animals!

Choose a domesticated skunk

Did you know there’s a difference between wild and domestic skunks? Over the last 60 years or so, people have been breeding these animals in captivity because they make great pets.

Not only are domestic skunks more docile than their wild cousins, they have been de-skunked. That means their scent glands have been removed. When you share your home with this animal, you don’t have to worry about getting sprayed!

They’re curious and crave attention

Skunks are very curious creatures, and they love attention from their owners, which are two things that many pet parents look for in a new companion.

This can cause problems too. If not properly entertained, a skunk can get up to a lot of trouble. They can become mischievous and destructive. It’s a good idea to limit the access these animals have in the home when there isn’t someone around to keep an eye on them.

They can be trained to sleep at night

Skunks are technically crepuscular, which means they are more active at dawn and dusk. However, they can very easily accommodate your schedule. They can be taught to sleep at night.

This is different than many other animals. For example, cats have a very unique sleep and wake schedule that you probably won’t be able to alter. Hamsters are up all night and there really isn’t anything you can do about it.

Make sure skunks are legal in your state

If you’re sold on bringing home a skunk, you shouldn’t go out and get one quite yet. That’s because they aren’t legal in every state.

These animals are only legal in 17 states that include Florida, Iowa, and South Dakota. However, even in states that allow skunks, you may be required to carry a special permit. There may be certain restrictions and rules you need to follow as well.
