Basking Requirements For Red-Eared Sliders

Basking is very important for the health of red-eared sliders. Steps should be taken to encourage the turtles to get out of the water and bask regularly. Effort should be exerted to make the basking area attractive and easily accessible to your pet. Other important requirements for basking areas inside the tanks of red-eared sliders include:

  • Heat source – To encourage basking, the spot should be about 10 degrees warmer than the temperature of the water in the tank. A basking temperature that is too hot may increase your pet’s risk of hyperthermia.

  • Non-toxic chemicals – The basking platform must not be treated with chemicals to avoid altering the water chemistry.

  • Stability – The basking platform should be sturdy and stable enough to avoid dismantling.

  • UVB light – Install the light over the basking area to make sure that the turtle can take full advantage of the emitted rays. Glass and even water can filter out UVB RAYS. But the light should be high enough to avoid burning your turtles. And it shouldn’t get wet if the turtles splash around. Schedule an appointment today!
